La-La Land Records, MGM and Capitol Records proudly present a 3-CD limited edition 50th Anniversary remastered and expanded reissue of acclaimed composer John Williams’ Academy Award-Winning score to the classic 1971 motion picture adaptation of the Tony Award-Winning musical FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, starring Topol, Norma Crane and Leonard Frey, and produced and directed by Norman Jewison. The timeless songs (“Matchmaker,” “If I Were a Rich Man,” “Sunrise, Sunset,” etc.) were written by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, and the film soundtrack features virtuoso violin soloist Isaac Stern. Orchestrations for the film are by Alexander Courage and Williams himself.

The enduring big screen film version of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, produced by The Mirisch Company in association with United Artists, premiered 50 years ago and went on to become one of the year’s biggest hits and earn Academy Awards for Cinematography, Sound and Best Adapted Score. The winner in the latter category was none other than John Wiliams, soon after to become the world’s most famous film composer and win Oscars for his own now-classic music for JAWS, STAR WARS, E.T. and SCHINDLER’S LIST.

In celebration of the film’s 50th anniversary, this deluxe presentation, approved by Mr. Williams, offers a fully restored, remixed and remastered original soundtrack recording program on Disc One, a second disc of alternate versions, and a third disc featuring early “playback” versions of the songs as well as selections of Williams’ underscore and other musical material released for the first time. (Some tracks on Disc 3 are derived from the finished film mix and may contain sound effects). Produced, restored, mixed and mastered in high resolution by Mike Matessino (from the 1-inch 8-track soundtrack masters for the main program material), this limited CD re-issue of 5000 units includes an exclusive, deluxe essay booklet by Matessino that provides a detailed account of the creation of the score, which was recorded at Anvil Studios in England, and never-before-seen photos from the recording sessions. Pour le Friday the 13th j'ai déjà tous les cd's de Manfredini. Pas certain que ce cd apporte un plus. Et pour le Violon, ah je ne suis pas riche...

Elle est bonne

L'encore chevelu John Williams lors de la cérémonie des Oscars 1972 ou il obtint la statuette pour son adaptation du Violon sur le toit:

Moi aucun titre ne m'intéresse dans cette fournée, mais les sorties ne manquent pas, et je me rattraperai ailleurs.

Ce ne sont pas les sorties de CD intéressants qui manquent et je dois comme tout un chacun choisir (ici choix facilité quand rien ne m'attire).

Uniquement des scores que je ne connais pas ou très peu, donc je vais écouter tout ça, et attendre les extraits surtout pour le Newman (niveau qualité sonore), avant de me décider !

Pour moi, The Diary of Anne Frank à l'évidence (versions film et album, en plus...), ensuite Fiddler on the Roof (rien que pour le livret et le côté "coffre aux trésors" des suppléments, déjà...) Le reste, à voir en fonction des extraits.

Personnellement, je pense que je ne puiserai dans les entrailles du larfeuille que pour acquérir The Diary of Anne Frank, le disque parfait où se délecter des légendaires violonades de Newman et de leur suc capiteux, au contraire de tellement d'autres partitions (conçues plus souvent qu'à leur tour sous l'égide du sieur Alfred lui-même) qui s'acharnèrent à essorer la formule gagnante jusqu'à son irrémédiable pétrification.

If I was a rich man… j'achèterai quelque chose, mais ce n'est pas le cas !

De cette fournée, je prends sans hésiter le Williams et LOVE ACTUALLY. Pour le Newman, j'hésite car parfois je suis déçu de la remasterisation de ces vieux scores. Car, tout pétri de qualités soit-il, je me rends compte qu'au final je privilégie souvent les réenregistrements des vieux scores...

Dans ce cas, tu ne devrais pas hésiter. D'abord l'enregistrement est de bonne qualité et en stéréo, ensuite - comme Lee l'a rappelé - le son de l'orchestre et la direction font partie intégrante de son style. Mais tu verras selon les extraits.

D'ou proviennent les morceaux inédits du Violon sur le Toit?

Everything prepared for the original album, including the extra tracks not on the LP, are at MGM. Studio also provided 6-track comp and M&E from which I worked to extract and create segments that did not exist in any other way. Song playbacks were in the Mirisch archive. Demo of "Any Day Now" that was first heard on previous release was from Jerry Bock's cassette.

Bon, bien sûr ce n'est pas un score de John Williams mais pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas vous ne serez pas déçu car son style transpire dans chaque morceaux , il s'agit d'arrangements pour le film avec une dynamique toute Williamssienne qui dans certains passages phares ne peuvent qu'emporter l'adhésion tant l'orchestre s'en donne à coeur joie. Pour moi le film est un pur plaisir cinématographique d'un humour toujours aussi percutant malgré les années , osez la découverte vous passerez un moment (long) très positif.
