Knowing - The Deluxe Edition 2-CD
Knowing was a hit when it was released in the spring of 2009, starring Nicolas Cage as an MIT astrophysics professor trying to decipher a prophecy of numbers that eerily predict worldwide disasters. Directed by Alex Proyas (The Crow), the film features Cage in a race against time with the entire human race at stake.

Reuniting with Proyas from I, Robot was composer Marco Beltrami, who provided Knowing with a powerful score at turns suspenseful, terrifying, pulse-pounding and action-packed. Recorded with a large orchestra in Australia, the score also has poignant emotional moments and a grand scope befitting the film’s apocalyptic implications.

Knowing was released by Varèse Sarabande as a single CD at the time of the film. This 2CD Deluxe Edition nearly doubles the playing time, and features new liner notes by Daniel Schweiger incorporating interviews with Beltrami and his co-composers, Buck Sanders and Marcus Trumpp.

Lionheart - The Deluxe Edition 2-CD
Jerry Goldsmith reinvented himself numerous times over his storied career, but one of his most popular periods was for the 1980s wave of large-scale symphonic scores. Lionheart (1987) came at the crest of this glorious period, and saw his rousing symphonic style—with glorious melodies, dazzling orchestrations, and synthesized embellishments—tackle a young-adult adventure in the Crusades.

Lionheart marked Goldsmith’s final collaboration with his friend and most prolific director collaborator, Franklin Schaffner (Planet of the Apes, Patton, Islands in the Stream). The film starred Eric Stoltz as the leader of a Children’s Crusade of orphans against Gabriel Byrne as an evil Black Prince. Little-seen today, the project is perhaps best-known for Goldsmith’s magnificent score, which he recorded with the Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra; its stirring, noble main theme made its way into Goldsmith’s concert repertoire.

Varèse Sarabande’s album producers in 1987 adored the Lionheart score so much that they released not one but two volumes of vinyl LPs. Most, but not all, of the tracks were released on a single CD compilation in 1994. Now, this 2CD Deluxe Edition presents the complete contents of both LPs, in film sequence, and adds two additional, previously unreleased cues. Because the new cues are sourced from reference material, they are labeled as “bonus tracks” at the end of a shorter-than-expected disc one, so as to remain in chronological order. The new liner notes are by Tim Greiving.

Achats direct pour moi même si le Lionheart n'offre rien de bien nouveau il me semble par rapport a l'édition Japonaise Volcano qui elle était en un seul cd ? Ou ai-je mal lu le tracklisting ?

Donc si j'ai bien compris deux morceaux non mentionnés sur le tracklisting du cd1 mais en bonus , quant à la source que signifie " from reference material" ? du dvd rip ?

Pour KNOWING c'est cool de voir autant de morceaux inédits pour cet excellent score de l'ami Marco Beltrami.

Et en plus:

Heu..... je vais encore jouer les grincheux... mais.... sérieusement ? Le CD1 de cet expanded de LIONHEART fait 22 minutes alors que le CD2 en fait 60 ???

Pour le KNOWING, c'est probable que j'en reste au cd d'origine qui me parait très bien. A moins que les inédits valent vraiment le détour...

Tiens, je ne savais pas que Beltrami avait aussi composé Lionheart ? Sinon, en fait pour le "Lionheart" les deux seules pistes inédites pour ceux qui ont déjà les deux VCD Varèse se résument aux 4 dernières minutes du premier Cd, à savoir "Bondage" et "Black prince" ? Parfait, aucun achat essentiel pour moi ce mois-ci.

Fournée économique pour moi. Le Beltrami ne me tente pas plus que ça (c'est très bien fait j'en suis sûr, mais ce n’est plus trop ce que j'écoute). Pour Lionheart, étant fan du Vol 1 qui demeure un album Goldsmithien "de concours" à la durée et présentation idéales pour moi, et n'écoutant le Vol 2 que très rarement, cette présentation chronologique ne justifie pas un rachat à mes yeux. Mais c'est une bonne nouvelle qu'il soit plus largement disponible.

Rien de bien nouveau donc, mais c'est une bonne fournée.

C'est une très bonne chose que Lionheart soit réédité pour le faire découvrir à un nouveau public, car c'est une partition d'une qualité exceptionnelle, l'apothéose de la plus fastueuse période de Goldsmith (75-87), mais aucun intérêt si on a déjà les éditions précédentes, effectivement.

Ah mais tu ne te trompes point mon Shardonnay (hips ! à la tienne !). Mais voilà, je dois me rendre à l'évidence. Je trouve le cd d'origine vraiment bien. Souvent, quand je craque pour une intégrale, et même si je goute à leurs justes valeurs certains inédits (Radek's Theme de Goldsmith dans AIR FORCE ONE par exemple), je trouve que ça dilue un peu trop. Les exceptions à ce constat ne sont pas nombreuses : comme ça, en vrac, DIE HARD 2 et ROBIN HOOD de l'ami Kamen par exemple).

Pour moi Knowing reste un des meilleurs scores de Beltrami. Le sujet l'a visiblement passionné. Donc c'est sans hésiter que j'ai commandé ce double.

"One problem: since the two previously unreleased cues were definitely in inferior sound quality to the rest of the score, Cary wanted to put them at the end of disc 2 (after the end credits) as bonus tracks. I lobbied hard for them to be included in chronological order and just labeled with asterisks that they were in lower sound quality, but Cary didn’t like the thought of having great sounding cues on either side of poorer sounding ones. This is where Lukas Kendall, who also assisted Varese on this release, came in with a good compromise: keep the full score in chronological order which I felt so strongly about so that the thematic development can be preserved...but have the new cues end Disc 1 instead of Disc 2. That way they were still bonus tracks at the end of a CD rather than interrupting in between great sounding cues. So for those of you wondering why disc 1 is 22 minutes and Disc 2 is 62 minutes, this is why. It wouldn’t all fit on one disc, and it actually does work out well as a split because Children in Bondage is actually a great opener to Disc 2. If the extra music had survived the ages in pristine sound, The Road from Paris is where I’d have started Disc 2. But given the circumstances, I think the split makes total sense and I hope everyone else enjoys this new presentation of a top 10 Goldsmith score as much as I do."

Les éditions précédentes vont me suffire sur ce coup-là. Mais bien évidemment, il faut se ruer sur le "Lionheart" pour ceux qui l'on raté. Et c'est vrai, un Beltrami de très haut niveau, parmi ses meilleurs.

Très bonne surprise que ce Knowing Deluxe ! L'album d'origine étant plutôt généreux, je n'avais jamais vraiment pensé à ce titre pour une édition Deluxe. La prochaine fois, j'espère que ce sera le tour de Blade II ou Scream 3

Si je me souviens bien Morty avait fait une commande qui n'avait pas été taxée, dans ce domaine ça peut être très aléatoire et selon le montant de la commande, j'ai tenté le coup en espérant ne pas avoir a débourser 30 e de taxes supplémentaires pour ces deux cds .
