Mouais... j'avais écouté le premier volume à sa sortie en digital et n'en garde aucun souvenir. La petite suite enregistrée dans la compil World Soundtrack Awards me suffit pour le coup.

C'est marrant, les sorties Intrada passent complètement inaperçues en ce moment. Personne n'a l'air intéressé par Cosmos vol. 3 de Silvestri sorti ce matin...

Franchement, je ne peux pas dire que c'est inintéressant mais, au vu du potentiel du monsieur, cela fait quand même figure de bière un peu tiède... Et comme je n'aime pas l'alcool...

INTRADA frappera fort pour sa dernière fournée de l'année le 5 Décembre:

We'll end the year with our last two releases of the year on Dec. 5th. One I mentioned earlier is a 4-CD set guaranteed to make golden age fans very happy. The second is the release of the year -- for me personally. It's not one people would have expected so it will be a bit of a surprise. But people have asked for it!

J'aime bien cette annonce, elle hameçonne bien et relativise en même temps - on peut imaginer à peu près n'importe quoi. En tout cas je suis impatient !

Comme il le dit lui même ça n'aide pas vraiment à trouver, sauf peut-être le "13 years in development" (depuis 2004 donc), et encore... (ce n'est sûrement pas lié à Goldsmith mort en 2004, ce n'est pas un compositeur de l'âge d'or...)

11 films, ça laisse supposer qu'il s'agit principalement de scores incomplets. Perso je ne crois pas trop à une compil Rozsa, Intrada ayant ces dernières années épuisé pas mal de grands titres ou de raretés, et ses réenregistrements avec le RPO sont écartés d'emblée car ils couvrent à eux seuls bien plus de 11 films. Reste que le compositeur est sûrement une valeur sûre, Herrmann par exemple...

Oui ça fleure bon la box Herrmann de derrière les fagots, si c'est le cas une vraie bonne surprise de fin d'année reste a savoir quels sont ces 11 films du Golden age qu'il aurait mis en musique pour 3 studios différents ?

If so, then to qualify the initial statement, it will please Golden Age fans who also like re-recordings.

J'imagine tout à fait qu'il puisse s'agir d'un projet de réenregistrements monté par le Label sur l'œuvre d'un compositeur majeur et pour des titres dont les masters étaient soit en mono soit de piètre qualité stéréo et même déjà édités ailleurs, du coup Rozsa peut rester en lisse Herrmann aussi et peut-être même un compositeur comme Tiomkin.

C'était une création réalisée à l'occasion du festival Yaouank en 2016. Voilà un passage sympa qui met l'orchestre à l'honneur (je préfère nettement les passages instrumentaux aux passages chantés mais ça n'est pas étonnant de la part d'un béophile).

Columbia film also gets Academy Award nomination for “Best Picture” with Edward Dmytryk directing, Stanley Kramer producing. Numerous famed stars add support including Fred MacMurray, Jose Ferrer, Van Johnson, E.G. Marshall, Lee Marvin, others. Newcomers Robert Francis (sadly killed in a plane crash soon after his promising debut here), May Wynn (Donna Lee Hickey, officially adapting her on-screen character name as her stage name) give standout performances as well. Max Steiner also gets Academy Award nomination for his rousing action-packed score. It’s of interest to note Bogart lost the Oscar that year to Marlon Brando for On The Waterfront, made all the more ironic since Brando lost the Streetcar Named Desire Oscar race in 1951 to Bogart for The African Queen. (On The Waterfront by Leonard Bernstein is also available on Intrada CDs.) Through combined efforts of Columbia Pictures and Intrada, entire score has been restored from mono music elements stored on D/M/E rolls, happily free of any dialog or sound effects. Every cue survives! Included with Intrada CD is vocal performance seen on screen by May Wynn of “I Can’t Believe That You’re In Love With Me”, followed by George Duning instrumental arrangement of same Jimmy McHugh tune for subsequent scene in film, made important soon afterwards as Steiner’s primary “love theme” of score. Dynamic “hustle and bustle” fanfare-theme heard throughout represents spirited life aboard wartime vessel. Stirring major-key martial theme shares equal time, plays for the Navy and the Caine herself. Several exciting set pieces feature: training sequence “Lost Paravane”, battle sequence “Yellow Streak”, vivid and dramatic “Queeg Rants”. Historical footnote of import: RCA prepared an LP in 1954 of dramatic highlights with no Steiner score free of dialog or sound effects. LP, emphasizing un-scored court-martial sequence, was immediately withdrawn due to legalities and few copies made it to market. Even without score sans dialog or effects, LP value today is in the thousands of dollars. Intrada CD presentation makes actual Max Steiner score available at last… and at a fraction of that price!
